Policy for Closing SJELC due to Severe Weather

St. James ELC, along with the catholic schools in the Diocese of Savannah, will follow the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools for weather-related closings. Local TV and radio stations will provide bad weather announcements concerning cancellations, closings and delays. Please check this website and all available news outlets for the most current information. The center will close if there is a prolonged power, water or AC outage and parents will be called and asked to come and pick up their children. School will resume the following day provided the utilities are running.

WINTER DRESS CODE

DRESS THE CHILDREN IN LAYERS ON COLD DAYS. MAKE SURE ALL THEIR HATS, COATS, AND MITS ARE LABELED.

Emergency Plans for SJELC Staff & Students

Tropical Storm/Hurricane Warning
All parents must come to the ELC and pick up their children if Chatham County goes into warning. Children should be picked up within a two-hour window from the time the warning is issued for the county. Children will be in their classrooms with ELC staff.
Tropical Storm/Hurricane Watch
All parents must make a plan for pickup and alternative childcare in case the ELC closes due to storm warnings being issued in the near future. Pay close attention to weather reports on your local and national weather news stations.
Tornado Warning
Staff take children into the Girls and Boys bathrooms at the end of the ELC hallway. Staff must take their first aid bags with flashlights and copies of children’s personal information. Make sure you count and double count children for safety. Sing songs, read a story, keep children the least stressed as possible.
Fire/Hazards in Church Building
All children will be immediately evacuated to St. James School. If it is not safe there, all children will accompany St. James School students to Spanish Oaks Retreat located on Whitefield Avenue behind the school building, within walking distance from the Rectory. Parents will be contacted to pick up if we are not able to re-enter the building safely.

General Safety in ELC
Doors to each classroom in the ELC are locked while the children are in care. The doors are only opened to people that we recognize and who have a child in the center. Parents always have access to all parts of the ELC while their child is in care. If you arrive to the center and the doors are locked, and the classrooms are empty, please go around to Miss Wendy’s office in the center of the church building to pick up your child. We may be playing in the gymnasium or out on the playground. All children must be signed in and out of care by a parent or an authorized adult each day. If a staff member does not know or recognize the adult picking up, they must ask for a photo ID. Always call the office if someone other than a parent is picking up child from care. We do everything possible to keep the children safe at all times.
